The swim starts from the majestic white sandy beach of the Shangri-La. Thanks to the sheltered bay, swimming conditions are expected to be very good with very little current, minimal swell and great visibility. The water temperature will be around 27-28C.
The turns on the 750m-long triangular swim course are marked by tall turn buoys and intermittent marker buoys. Athletes in the Olympic Distance complete the course twice.
The bike course takes place on wide, smooth and quiet roads through the scenic and rugged hinterland of the Muscat coast. For all its ‘ruggedness’ the total elevation is very moderate at 300m for the 40km Olympic Course. The 3 hills (see details in below table) on the course are all located in the first and last 5km of the ride, making the Sprint course relatively hillier with a 200m elevation for 20 kilometers.
A drink station is located at the 22km point of the Olympic Distance Triathlon where you will be able to grab a 700 ml bike bottle with water.
Note that the roads are not closed for traffic. However, marshals will be managing traffic at junctions to give cyclists right of way.
Hill | Out | Back |
1 | 900m long at 5.5% avg | 500m long at 7% avg |
2 | 300m long at 3.5% avg | 500m long at 4.5% avg |
3 | 1.8km long at 2% avg | 1.2km long at 2.5% avg |
The run course follows the same beautiful route as the bike course for the first 3km and then turns off the main road for a stunning 4km long off-road track before u-turning at Wadi Aday. The 3km home stretch is back on tarmac. Sprint athletes turn back earlier at the 2.5km mark. Total elevation for the Olympic and Sprint is respectively 140m and 120m.
Drink stations with water and isotonic drinks are available every two kilometers.
